There’s no denying how powerful social media has become; we’re always on it, scrolling our time away. This is great for businesses because social media platforms have made it easily accessible to get hold of target audiences at all times of the day and keep brands and products fresh in our faces. But while it’s good, if it’s your only focus point, you’re making one of the biggest marketing mistakes out there.
Repeat after us: Social media marketing alone isn’t enough to drive long-term growth and sustainable revenue.
Here’s why and what you need to be doing to actually grow your business.
The algorithm isn’t always on your side
You could put so much effort and thought into creating a post, but that doesn’t guarantee it will reach anyone.
The truth is, organic reach has been declining for years, and with ever-changing algorithms, social media platforms decide who sees your content, not you unfortunately.
So if you are creating all this amazing content but no one is seeing it, then what should you do?
- Diversify it. Don’t put all your marketing efforts into one platform.
- Use email marketing to stay in direct contact with your audience.
- Use paid ads to make sure your content is actually reaching the right people consistently.
Followers don’t automatically equal sales
It’s an easy presumption to think that if you have over 10K followers on your social media, then you’ll be doing alright in the sales department, but that’s not always the case at all.
With social media, you might get a lot of likes and comments on your post which is brilliant for brand awareness, but it doesn’t mean those people are buying from you; there’s a high chance of them converting, yes, but it’s not guaranteed.
To make your marketing a success, you need to:
- Have a clear customer journey for people after they see your post.
- Create a marketing funnel by having social media as just the first step, not the entire strategy.
- Drive traffic directly to your website or a particular landing page.
Your social media platforms don’t belong to you
This might sound odd because how do they not? But all your pages and content belong to either Facebook or TikTok, and at any moment they could change their rules, suspend accounts, or even shut down (think of TikTok in the US earlier this year). And if they did and your whole business relies on them, well that’s a big obstacle to overcome.
What you should do is:
- Build an email list as email will always be a channel you can fully control.
- Develop an SEO strategy so your business ranks on Google.
- Use multiple marketing channels so your business isn’t just dependent on one platform.
Social media alone doesn’t build long-term trust
People don’t buy immediately. They need multiple touchpoints before they trust your brand enough to make a purchase.
The reality is that if you’re only posting organically on social media, you’re missing out on deeper ways to build relationships.
So make sure you are:
- Using retargeting ads to stay visible to people who have engaged with your content.
- Creating consistent email marketing campaigns to further nurture your audience.
- Developing high-value content in the form of blogs, case studies, video marketing etc, to position YOU as an expert.
What a full-funnel marketing approach looks like
Social media to build brand awareness (but don’t stop here!).
Email marketing to nurture your audience.
SEO and content marketing to attract people organically.
Paid ads to ensure consistent visibility.
Website and landing pages to convert visitors into buyers.
Never rely on one strategy alone.
We are by no means saying social media marketing isn’t effective in this blog, but what works today might not work tomorrow which is why covering a variety of platforms is essential.
Remember, social media is a tool, not a whole solution.
